This thesis examines how to reconstruct non-standard workers' social capital in their everyday lives and the function and the meaning of social capital for non-standard workers. It concentrate on (1) how the social networks of non-standard workers is formed and reconstructed in everyday life and (2) what is the characteristics of social capital obtained from the social network and its function.
The case study reveals that the main moment of social capital reconstruction is the change of economic conditions. In addition, the social barriers such as educational background and retirement also influence on network reconstruction. Those causes lead status change of non-standard workers and make their status maintain.
Non-standard workers obtain resources through individual network. On the contrary, their resources through collective network, such as alumni association and mutual-aid society, are relatively limited. However, life-historical analysis reveals that the opportunity of possession and share of individual and collective resources is reconstructed through individual life history. In this process, cultural regulation and constraint make individual break away from or isolate from network. Retrenchment of social network through social capital reconstruction reduces the opportunity of favorable employment and begins non-standard work.
Even the social capital from collective network is restricted to non-standard workers, they approach to collective network through individual relationship. However, excluded individuals from the official collective network can not share the collective resources but 'they depend or are subordinated on resources exclusively possessed by collective network economically.' If not, they use different social network, such as neighborhood social capital. The former is observed in the case of G who has semi-professional career experience and the latter in the case of B who retired from simple labor work. G was rehired as non-standard worker in a firm subcontracted from a large enterprise and B was relocated through his wife's neighborhood network after retirement. Such dependence or self-dependence network shows social structure to restrict non-standard workers from gaining favorable job and make them to remain in non-standard work.
Even the social capital is subordinate, non-standard workers do not waive their minimum relationship. If they waive, they would lose resources to maintain immediate livelihood. On the other hand, social capital reconstruction can be interpreted positively. With the viewpoint of above, non-standard workers restore social relationship which has been inattentive to construct their own social capital. This means that non-standard workers have the potentiality of social capital formation under the new social relationship structure. For this, revitalization of networking, which is suit for non-standard workers characteristics such as not networking in workplace but networking in neighborhood, is requested.
